COURSE (UNCPOCС)
Course Description
The course consists of three modules on “Protection of Civilians” at the tactical level. The modules are designed and developed by the Integrated Training Service of the Department of Peace Operations of the United Nations. All course materials are approved by the UN and are mandatory for the candidates deploying to UN missions with a POC mandate.

This course is conducted through a combination of presentations, videos, syndicate discussions and scenario exercises. Syndicate groups will solve scenario-based problems and present solutions to the plenary. The scenarios for syndicates will be mixed in order to prepare the students for work in an integrated UN-mission.
Course aim

The aim of the course is to comprehend military, police and civilian actors (company-battalion level) with Protection of Civilians Concept and explain how to work in multidimensional Peace Operations to improve the situation of vulnerable groups and protect them from harm.

UN DPO regards The Comprehensive Protection of Civilians training as mandatory prior to deployment to a UN mission.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Explain the integrated mission concept and the various roles and responsibilities of mission elements
  • Explain how and why POC has become a priority objective for UN peacekeeping and how the failure to protect civilians can affect the credibility of the mission and the UN
  • Explain the protection objectives in a POC mandated UN peacekeeping mission
  • Explain the rights and obligations of peacekeepers in protecting the civilians
COURSE NOTES
  • Duration: 5 - 10 days (1-2 week’s)
  • Seat allocation: 25 participants
  • Upcoming course iterations: June 17-28, 2024
  • Training audience: Employees of national and regional governmental agencies, as well as IOs and NGOs deployed to the region. The course is open to NATO, PfP, MD, ICI and other nations as approved
